While Search automatically returns results based on relevance, you might want to adjust results for specific queries. The Search Merchandiser is an in-platform tool to modify search results using a drag-and-drop, point-and-click interface. It has three modes:

• Reorder Entities — creates/edits Query Rules under the hood
• Reorder Verticals — creates/edits Query Rules under the hood
• Change Featured Snippets — adds to Experience Training

Search Merchandiser is particularly useful for those who aren't familiar with query rules and Experience Training, or who prefer to modify results through a quick visual interface.

Note: There are system limitations to the types of query rules that can be created through Search Merchandiser. See the Query Rule Support section below.

Navigating Search Merchandiser

Access Search Merchandiser for a particular search query via Test Search (full screen or side panel) by clicking the Edit Results button after running that search query.

You'll land in Reorder Entities mode. Use the icons on the left to switch between the three modes at any time. Changes in Reorder Entities mode and Reorder Verticals mode are added to the same query rule and only saved when you click Save. Changes in the Change Featured Snippets mode are saved automatically within that screen.

Reorder Entities Mode

Move entities to the top or bottom of each vertical's results using the blue boosted zone or gray buried zone. Change the order by dragging and dropping or using the boost and bury icons. You can only set the order of entities in the boosted or buried zones.

Add new entities to the result set by clicking "Search entities" in the boosted zone. Only entities included in that vertical (respecting entity types and saved filters) will be shown. Added entities may only appear in the boosted zone — removing an added entity removes it from results entirely.

Reorder Verticals Mode

Similar to Reorder Entities mode, but for reordering verticals instead of individual entities. In this mode you only see the list of verticals and result counts — not individual results.

Changes from both Reorder Entities and Reorder Verticals modes appear in the same query rule. Move verticals into the blue boosted zone or gray buried zone. You can only set the order of verticals in the boosted or buried zones.

Query Rules for Reorder Entities and Verticals

Editing the order of entities and verticals creates a query rule that updates as you move things around:

• Name: "When search term is '[search term]'" by default (editable before saving)
• Criteria: searchTermExactlyMatches set to the query entered
• Actions: BOOST_ENTITIES, BURY_ENTITIES, BOOST_VERTICALS, BURY_VERTICALS as applicable

The query rule is not saved until you click Save. From there, click the pencil icon to edit directly in the query rules page, or the trash can icon to delete the rule entirely.

Opening Search Merchandiser for a search term that already has a query rule will show the existing rule in the sidebar.

Query Rule Support in Search Merchandiser

Currently, Search Merchandiser only supports:

• One query rule
• Criteria: searchTermExactlyMatches
• Actions: BOOST_ENTITIES, BURY_ENTITIES, BOOST_VERTICALS, BURY_VERTICALS

If a search term has multiple query rules, or a single query rule with unsupported criteria or actions, you'll see a warning message in the Query Rules sidebar. Click the pencil icon to edit the query rule on the query rules page.

Change Featured Snippets Mode

Advanced Search Tier Feature: Featured snippets are only available on the Advanced Search tier.

The Change Featured Snippets mode uses Experience Training (not query rules), so it is independent of the other two modes. It only appears if the experience has a vertical with document search enabled.

Similar to the Test Search screen, a wand icon lets you train the featured snippet. This opens the Featured Snippet modal where you can edit the snippet predicted by the algorithm.

Note: There are UI differences between training featured snippets from Search Merchandiser versus the Experience Training screen. Only Search Merchandiser supports changing the entity you pull the snippet from. Only the Experience Training screen supports rich text featured snippets.
