Duplicate Listings can occur for a variety of reasons: you may have created a second page on Facebook not realizing one already existed, someone else may have created an additional page, or customers may have created a page through an attempt to check-in at your location.
However, regardless of how it happens, duplicate listings can have a negative impact on your brand, and they are something you will want to manage. Therefore, Facebook has a process to allow you to manage these duplicate listings. This is done primarily by merging a duplicate page with an existing page that you manage.
This article will walk you through the process of suppressing and merging duplicate listings on Facebook. This process will differ slightly based on the page type, and whether or not you have a Facebook Representative.
Requirements for merging pages on Facebook:
-
You can only request a merge if you're an admin for both Pages.
- Even if the page is in a location structure, you must be an admin on the actual location page in order to merge.
- You also need to be an admin for at least one week before being able to submit merge requests.
- The Pages you merge must represent the same thing and have similar names. If you try to merge Pages that aren't similar, the Pages may be permanently unpublished.
Important notes to consider:
-
Merging Pages can't be undone once you've started the process.
- The merge process is instantaneous - it is not just a request.
- The merge tool UI does not display the Facebook Descriptor or other identifying information for the pages you may be trying to merge.
- Before you merge you must first manually re-name the pages slightly to identify them later in the tool.
- We recommend submitting merges through your Facebook Representative (if you have one), to avoid accidentally merging the wrong pages.
- People who like the duplicate Page will be informed of the merge. This may take a few days to complete.
- Content from the merged Page, such as posts, photos, and the username, will be deleted during the merge. For steps on how to download and save content from your Page, visit Facebook’s How can I download a copy of my Facebook Page? help article.
- ‘Likes’ and ‘check-ins’ from both Pages will be combined and shown on the remaining Page.
